Gals, some of our summer is dedicated to more time to serve those who can’t help themselves. The Lord has blessed us beyond measure. We’re not rich financially but He has always provided for our needs. When He blesses, I believe, we are called to bless others. So, my beloved husband and I are teaching our children to serve and give.
24Â A PSALM OF DAVID.
1 The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
2Â for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. 2001 (Ps 24:title–2).Â
11 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 13 And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.
14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 1
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. 2001 (1 Ch 29:11-15).
All we have and all we have been given, has been given to us by His grace. He owns it all and we desire to teach our children this truth and the real joy of giving it all back to Him! There is such a real joy in giving back as He has given us so much! So, we are starting, first through ministries at our local church. And as God would have it, there always seems to have something that needs to be done and it always just happens to fit in my children’s different leanings 🙂 Cody, my middle son, his love language is to do things for others. He has been blessed, and I mean blessed as he finds such joy in this, Â helping our Families and Facilities Pastor and he helps set up for church services and taking down, cleaning and scrubbing. He just lights up! He is using the gifts of helps to show his love for His Savior and his church family. Trenton is learning to use his love of technology and is helping out in children’s church and in adult services with the sound booth and camera ministries. He is my quiet, silent one who is being pulled out of his shell and allowing the Lord to use him as well. Trevor is being used in missions and has found a love for going a broad and sharing the gospel to those who have not heard and need a touch of grace. He is also learning that he has a call for teaching and tech. Â But he has been pulled towards the military from a young age and so he also helps with security.
My girls are not left out. Taylor has always had a pull in her heart for children. She is in college now learning to be a teacher so she spends a lot of time at church with children. She shines and the Lord loves a giving heart. Tara, she has a bent towards drama and worship thru the arts, as so does he father   (our Worship Arts Pastor) so she is deeply involved there .. and she is interning with dad as well. She also has a calling toward preaching and she is learning to dig deep in the Word to share. I am not sharing this for applause  and to bring glory to our family but I want to encourage you to allow your children to serve in your church, even at an early age. Find their own bent. Help them find their own giftings and talents and where their personalities lead and let them learn to give of themselves. It is a privilege and honor to be able to serve and they need to learn to serve as a lifestyle 🙂
But the church is not the only place to serve..We have a food kitchen where we are looking to sign up to give. We have a Christian home for abused and hurting women and children. We give of our back yard harvest. We seek to give to those who have been hurt and broken. It is important to us that our children understand that our lives are not ours but His and freedom and joy comes from loving and serving others. So, though this is not strictly a summer activity, it is a time that they can give. They have youth camps where they are blessed to be able to learn more and dig deep into His Word and come home revived.
Teaching our children to serve is an important life lesson for our family and I encourage you to do the same. There is a joy beyond measure to show with our hands and hearts that we love Him. We do not need to be seen or out in front but He notices when we love on His people and love on the lost more importantly. You can do this daily by teaching your young men to seek out, to be observant..when they an elderly lady at the store, offer to help her around. Your daughters, let them take children in the neighborhood so the young mom and get some rest. Find age appropriate ways for your children to serve. Even taking a walk with you and picking up garbage around your neighborhood or your own home 🙂 Be creative! They see you serve them, allow them the same blessing!
